Godzilla burned through the box office competition this weekend, raking in a massive $93.205 million – more than three times as much as the No.2-ranked comedy Neighbors.
The 2014 reboot of the classic movie creature far exceeded expectations and posted the largest three-day May opening in Warner Bros. history and this year’s largest IMAX opening, according to estimates gathered by Rentrak.
Seth Rogen and Zac Efron’s Neighbors earned $25.9 million to take second-place in its second week in theaters, dropping from the No. 1 spot. This weekend’s Top 5 was rounded out by The Amazing Spider-man 2 at No. 3 with
$16.8 million; Million Dollar Arm, starring Mad Men’s Jon Hamm debuting
at No. 4 with $10.5 million; and, the revenge comedy The Other Woman in
fifth place with $6.3 million.
The remainder of the Box Office Top 10 was: Heaven is For Real, $4.4 million; Rio 2, $3.8 million; Captain America: The Winter Soldier, $3.7 million; Legends of Oz, $1.95 million; and, Mom’s Night Out, $1.9 million.
