Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes triumphed over three new movies this weekend, but the overall box office this summer continued to lag.
The Apes movie, in its second week of screenings, was on track to sell $36 million in tickets this weekend, according to studio projections gathered by Rentrak.
Over 10 days, the 20th Century Fox movie was estimated to take in $139 million in sales in the U.S. and Canada.
The numbers 2-3-4 debuts were The Purge: Anarchy at $28.4 million, Planes: Fire and Rescue at $18 million, and Sex Tape with $15 million.
Transformers: Age Of Extinction added another $10 million to its North American take, which now stands at $227.2 million.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies this weekend, as estimated by the studios and collated by Rentrak, were Tammy ($7.6 million), 22 Jump Street ($4.7 million), How To Train Your Dragon 2 ($3.8 million), Maleficent ($3.3 million) and Earth To Echo (3.7 million).
Movie analyst Paul Dergarabedian said the pack-leading performance of Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes fell short of the comparable weekend last summer, when The Conjuring and Despicable Me 2 drew a combined $66.7 million in sales.
