Good Vibrations – A New Kind Of Luxury Lifestyle Brand:

Do you know what a Pocket Rocket is? A Rabbit? A LELO?

I do now. The other day, I went with a friend to an adult toy store. An adult toy store – I am whispering now. Just writing this story I’m turning red.

My friend (whose name will remain anonymous) asked me to have lunch with her a few Saturdays ago. She lives in Sherman Oaks, so we met in the Valley. After a great lunch at Marmalade, we walked down the block and checked out the stores on Ventura Blvd.

My friend made a beeline into a very large store. A sex toy store… I am whispering again. She went in to buy something for a wedding shower of a friend who was getting married for the second time. She thought a vibrator would be the perfect gift for her 55-year-old friend.

Holy crap, I whispered. What if someone recognizes me, going into a store like this?

I put my dark sunglasses on and gingerly walked in behind her. It reminded me of a beauty supply store – all aisles were neat, well labeled, and filled with product.

We happened to be the only ones in the store (thank god). We walked up to the counter and approached the gal who worked there. She was heavy, fully tattooed and kind of scary. A little butch.

We asked her where the vibrators were. She replied, “What kind of vibe do you want? There’s the Rabbit, a very popular vibrator, or if you want to go first class, there’s LELO. Or, if you need something that can stimulate you wherever you go, the Pocket Rocket is very popular as well. I take my Pocket Rocket with me and I love it. I have also used this hot pink style LELO, and it’s great. I highly recommend it.”

OMG! She’s talking to us like she’s selling a pair of shoes! I blushed profusely.

My friend just giggled and asked to see the LELO line.

The LELO line of vibrators retailed for around $180. From Sweden, launched in 2003, they claim they are famous for transforming the look, feel, and function of how vibrators are perceived, creating a new kind of luxury lifestyle brand.

Before she made a final decision, we strolled down the isles, looking at all the gadgets that were available for sexual pleasure. Who knew? Apparently, everyone but me. I am too embarrassed to tell you what was there.

My friend ended up choosing a LELO. The model my friend selected was one of the brand’s best sellers, The Tara. The description that came with the velvet case read:

“Revolutionize your love life with TaraTM – the premium couples’ massager that promises mind-blowing sensations for both him and her. Worn when making love, TaraTM combines the dual pleasures of vibrations and rotations within, offering completely new sensations unlike any you have shared before.”

It was beautifully packaged and came in a black shiny shopping bag with rope handles and the word LELO in gold “engraved” on the bag.

Awesome.

Maybe I’ll add this item to my Christmas wish list. Hold on to your reindeer, Santa Claus!
