“The Hunger Game” sequel opened with a gigantic $123 million in estimated domestic sales this weekend, according to studio estimates.
And around the world, “Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Part 1” opened with $275 million in sales, joining the Harry Potter and Twilight series in that rarefied territory.
“Big Hero 6” was second with a still-strong $20 million, and “Interstellar” was third at $15.1 million. “Dumb And Dumber To” was popular too, in the top tier of movies and fourth place, at $13.8 million.
Rounding out the 10 best-selling films in the U.S. and Canada, as estimated by the studios and collated by Rentrak, were “Gone Girl” ($2.8 million), “Beyond The Lights” ($2.6 million), “Beyond The Lights” ($2.6 million), “St. Vincent” ($2.4 million), “Fury” ($1.9 million), “Birdman” $1.9 million) and “Theory Of Everything” ($1.5 million).
