An investigation was underway today into a possibly gang- or drug-related shooting in the Beverlywood area of Los Angeles that left one man dead and two others hospitalized, police said.
The attack occurred shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday near the 3100 block of Helms Avenue, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison said.
The name of the fatally injured victim, who died at a hospital, was withheld pending notification of relatives, a coroner’s investigator said.
The victims were apparently chased by more than one assailant and shot, Madison said.
An investigator who went to the scene said the victims did not cooperate with police, and it was unclear how many suspects were involved in the shooting, nor were any descriptions available.
The investigator said the victims’ uncooperative behavior is consistent with a crime that is possibly gang- or drug-related.
Nearby Hamilton High School was locked down for nearly two hours as a precaution following the shooting, according to the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Police searching the area handcuffed three people — two women and a man — and detained them for questioning, but they were later released, according to LAPD Officer Nuria Vanegas.
Anyone with more information on the case was urged to call police at (310) 444-1541.
