Three men were shot today — one fatally — in what police said may have been a gang- or drug-related crime in the Beverlywood area of Los Angeles.
The attack occurred shortly after 9 a.m. near the 3100 block of Helms Avenue, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison said.
The three victims were hospitalized, but one later died, police said. The dead man’s name was withheld pending notification of relatives.
The victims were apparently chased by the suspects and shot, Madison said.
At the crime scene, an investigator said the victims did not cooperate with police, and it was unclear how many assailants were involved in the shooting. He said there was also no description of the assailants available.
The investigator said the victims’ uncooperative behavior is consistent with a crime that is possibly gang- or drug-related.
Nearby Hamilton High School was locked down until about 10:40 a.m. as a precaution, according to the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Police searching the area ultimately handcuffed three people — two women and a man — and detained them for questioning.
Anyone with more information on the case was urged to call police at (310) 444-1541.
