Frigid temperatures gripped much of the Southland this morning on a day when few communities were expected to get out of the 50s.
A frost advisory was in effect until 9 a.m. in the San Fernando, San Gabriel and Santa Clarita valleys as well as the Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area.
The coldest area overnight was the western tier of the San Fernando valley, where the temperature dipped into the low 30s, National Weather Service forecasters said, nothing that pets, farm animals and sensitive vegetation should be brought indoors in such cold weather.
No frost advisory was issued for the Antelope Valley and the San Gabriel Mountains because these areas almost always experience freezing temperatures overnight in the winter, meaning that forecasters regard special frost advisories as unnecessary there.
The NWS forecast partly cloudy skies today and highs of 48 on Mount Wilson and in Palmdale; 50 in Lancaster; 53 in Saugus; 56 in Burbank; 57 in Mission Viejo and Woodland Hills; 58 in Yorba Linda, San Gabriel and Pasadena; 59 in downtown L.A., Avalon, LAX, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Irvine and San Clemente; 60 in Long Beach and Fullerton; and 61 in Anaheim.
Tuesday’s temperatures will be about the same but under sunny skies. A warming trend will get underway Wednesday, still under sunny skies, when several communities forecast to be in the 50s today will experience a temperature climb into the 60s.
