Parts of Ocean Avenue Closed Until September After Two Water Mains Break

By Sam Catanzaro

The City of Santa Monica is replacing a water main on Ocean Avenue due to two water main breaks that occurred on Saturday, August 10 and Wednesday, August 14. The City believes this water main break is related to partial pipe corrosion and is proactively replacing the entirety of the corroded pipeline. Water service has been restored to residents and businesses in the area. Service will remain uninterrupted.

This construction work requires temporary closures effective immediately with a sequence of closures through September 2019 along Ocean Avenue between Washington Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard. Motorists and cyclists are advised to seek alternate routes during these closures and to allow extra travel time to get to their destinations.

Work Area 1: Ocean Avenue between California and Washington avenues

Now through tomorrow, Friday, August 16, 2019 at 5 p.m.: The northbound and southbound lanes on Ocean Avenue between California and Washington avenues will be closed. Both northbound and southbound traffic will be detoured to 2nd Street and metered parking will be temporarily unavailable.

Monday, August, 19 at 7 a.m. through Friday, September 13, 2019: The northbound lane on Ocean Avenue between California and Washington avenues will be closed. Northbound traffic will be detourted to 2nd Street and metered parking will be temporarily unavailable. The City anticipates completing construction on September 13, 2019, but the anticipated completion date is subject to change. Please note that the southbound lane will be open to traffic.

Work Area 2: Ocean Avenue between Wilshire Boulevard and California Avenue

The City is in the process of scheduling construction work for work area 2 of the water main replacement and will issue a notice prior to starting construction.

Questions regarding this project can be directed to the Water Resources Division at 310-458-8736.
