A Tale of Two Hospitals: Santa Monica’s Medical Centers

The hospitals in Santa Monica feature the latest in technology and equipment; from a healthcare management perspective, they also provide the highest standards of staffing, payer contracting and reimbursement, and leadership.

The two major hospitals in the Santa Monica area are Providence Saint John’s Health Center and UCLA Health – Santa Monica Medical Center.

Providence Saint John’s Health Center

Formerly known as St. John’s Hospital and Health Center, Providence Saint John’s Health Center is a private Catholic hospital founded in 1942. In 2014, Providence Health and Services acquired the facility. Saint John’s Health Center provides the surrounding Los Angeles community with an incredibly high standard of care and patient commitment. It has been recognized in seven care categories by U.S. News and World Report Best Regional Hospital list.

The John Wayne Cancer Center, located at Saint John’s Health, is a leading community provider of research, clinical trials, and integrative care. Many of the oncologists and surgeons here are affiliated with the John Wayne Cancer Institute, where cutting-edge research is conducted. The John Wayne Cancer Center was also recognized by U.S. News and World Report as a high-performing hospital in the area of lung cancer surgery.

Saint John’s Heart Center offers expert cardiovascular care for the most challenging and complex heart conditions. Offering an array of non-invasive and invasive diagnostic techniques and therapies, the Heart Center has the ability to accurately pinpoint problems and tailor an appropriate treatment solution. The Center also features a state of the art PET scanner.

The Neurosciences Department at Saint John’s is affiliated with the Pacific Neuroscience Institute, a leader in neurological care and research. The Brain Tumor Center is recognized as one of the best regional hospitals for neurological care as well as neurosurgery. Brain tumors are an area of specialty here as well.

Saint John’s Health is led by a highly qualified and experienced leadership team. Staffing at Saint John’s features a portfolio of dedicated and talented physicians, nurses, and caregivers. Many of the surgeons and physicians here also hold faculty teaching positions as well as participate in clinical trials and research. The majority of the physicians here are listed as practicing a medical or surgical subspecialty. The balances are primary care or emergency medicine physicians. Of the over 900 physicians on staff, over 700 are board-certified.

Saint John’s Health’s payer mix consists of predominantly Third-Party Managed Care and Medicare Traditional patients. The hospital also maintains a lower percentage of indigent discharges versus the California average.

UCLA Health – Santa Monica Medical Center

Santa Monica Medical Center was founded in 1926. It is a member of UCLA Health and was awarded the 2020 Guardian of Excellence Award by Press Ganey for its Neonatal Unit. The larger UCLA Health hospital portfolio is one of the most globally recognized and comprehensive health care systems; the Adult ICU, Adult Surgical Unit, and the Labor Delivery are highly recognized in the surrounding community.

The Nethercutt Emergency Center is a 16,000 square foot facility that features an on-site CT scanner for neurological emergencies such as stroke. The hospital is also one of the few facilities that offer the UCLA Rape Treatment Center that physically and mentally treats victims of sexual assault, including children.

The BirthPlace at UCLA Health – Santa Monica Medical Center is one of the finest labor and delivery units in the area, offering a wide range of family-centered services and private rooms. The unit also offers helpful classes for new parents.

The hospital is led by a superbly qualified team that oversees both the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and UCLA Health – Santa Monica Health Center facilities. Within the Santa Monica Medical Center are a Chief of Staff and Vice Chief of Staff. The hospital is an academic medical center and teaching hospital and utilizes a team approach to care.

In 2019, Blue Shield of California signed a multi-year access agreement with UCLA Health that expands the network relationship between the two providers. The majority of the hospital’s payer mix is in Medicare and Contract, and the Medical Center recently renegotiated five of its largest contracts resulting in double-digit increases and new revenue to the system. Contract net patient revenue has also seen steady increases year after year.

Both Providence Saint John’s Health Center and UCLA Health – Santa Monica Medical Center boast recognized world-class service and care coupled with superior leadership and payer metrics. Both facilities are poised to successfully serve the Santa Monica community far into the future.
