New Gluten-Free Bakery Opens on Montana Avenue on Christmas Eve

Modern Bread and Bagel Takes Over the Former Breadblok Space

By Dolores Quintana

One of 2023’s most shocking restaurant closures was the unannounced closure of the entire Breadblok chain of gluten-free bakeries. Breadblok’s flagship store was located on Montana Boulevard, and it left a hole in the lives of people who live by gluten-free lifestyles. Not only are the baked goods gluten-free, but they are also kosher.

The good news is that another well-regarded gluten-free bakery has taken over the spot where Breadblock used to be on Montana Avenue and opened on Christmas Eve. For those of you who were missing Breadblok, the New York-based Modern Bread and Bagel is now open at 1511c Montana Avenue.

Modern Bread and Bagel’s website states, “Brunch is not just for the weekend. Guests can now enjoy mouth-watering, fast casual brunches, minus the gluten.  House smoked salmon as well as a variety of unique cream cheeses and dips, complement our kettle-boiled Ancient Grain Bagels. Our all-day menu features creative brunch items, including BYO and chef-curated fresh bagel sandwiches, a variety of avocado toasts, breakfast grilled cheese, craft salads, and hearty bowls.”

Chef Orly Gottesman learned her trade as a baker in a Paris bakery after moving to Europe. She was inspired to learn how to craft gluten-free breads and bagels because of her husband’s celiac condition. The bakery’s website also notes, “After living and traveling all around the world, Orly has accumulated a tremendous amount of baking skills as well as knowledge of culinary delights from several different cities. The dishes on the Modern Bread & Bagel menu are inspired by some of her and her husband’s favorite foods from around the world—namely Sydney, Paris, Tel Aviv, and New York.

The bakery is open for all-day brunch from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Snack time from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Modern Bread and Bagel also ships their goods nationwide.
