Getty Villa Hosts Villa Family Festival Celebrating Diverse Cultures

A Day of Music, Dance, and Hands-On Activities on May 19

The Getty Villa is hosting the Villa Family Festival on Sunday, May 19, 2024, offering a daylong celebration of diverse cultures inspired by the exhibition Picture Worlds: Greek, Maya, Moche Pottery. The event promises an immersive experience for families, with activities ranging from traditional Greek folk music to exploring the Maya calendar. The event is free and you can reserve your ticket here

Throughout the day, visitors can engage in various hands-on activities such as exploring the music and instruments of Mesoamerica with Martin Espino, learning to read ancestral Maya hieroglyphic writing with Stephanie Lozano, and participating in a pottery workshop inspired by ancient Greek, Maya, and Moche civilizations with Desi Sanchez.

Other highlights include coloring the Maya calendar with guidance from Maya timekeeper Tata Jose Ajpu Muñoz and Sara Z. Mijares, founder of Mundo Maya Foundation. Additionally, there will be special workshops on creating talking sticks, a symbol of sacred communication in Maya culture.

Live performances will further enhance the festival experience, including ceremonial Maya processions, traditional Greek music by The Dimitris Mahlis Ensemble, demonstrations of the Maya ballgame (pok-ta-pok), and colorful music and dances from Peru by Inca, the Peruvian Ensemble.

The festival aims to foster cultural exchange and appreciation while providing entertainment and educational opportunities for families.
