Santa Monica Police Make Over 40 Arrests in Evacuation Zones Amid Wildfire Response

Arrests Include Burglary, Curfew Violations, and Firearm Possession

Officers from the Santa Monica Police Department have arrested more than 40 individuals in the city’s evacuation zones since January 7, with charges ranging from burglary to curfew violations. The city’s curfew remains in effect from sunset to sunrise in evacuation zones. Officers continue to monitor these areas closely, detaining and arresting unauthorized individuals when necessary. All arrests occurred within areas under mandatory evacuation orders following recent wildfires.

Police Chief Ramon Batista commended his team for their efforts.

Among those arrested, ten individuals were charged with burglary, including multiple incidents on 18th Street, Euclid Street, and Carlyle Avenue. Six others were found with burglary tools, while the remaining arrests were for curfew violations, drug possession, driving infractions, outstanding warrants, and other offenses. Two suspects were found carrying concealed firearms.

This is a significant increase in the normal number of arrests in the neighborhoods in the evacuation zones (North of Montana – NOMA and WILMONT). Our dedicated team of officers did a phenomenal job saturating the evacuation areas and tamping down criminal activity.

None of those arrested were Santa Monica residents, according to police reports.

The app shows maps of active fires and evacuation zones, including the zones in Santa Monica. Officers searched the vehicle and located a black ski mask in between the driver’s seat and the passenger seat. They located a pair of black Nike nylon gloves in the driver’s side door.
