The focus will be on speeding, illegal turns, failing to yield or provide right of way to cyclists or walkers, and ignoring traffic signs
The Santa Monica Police Department will hold a traffic safety operation on Friday, July 18 from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., targeting dangerous driving behaviors that endanger bicyclists and pedestrians. The focus will be on violations such as speeding, illegal turns, failing to yield or provide right of way to cyclists or walkers, and ignoring traffic signs and signals.
With roads shared by all users, SMPD emphasizes that bicyclists and pedestrians have equal rights but face greater risks without vehicle protections. The department urges everyone to remain vigilant for one another’s safety.
To reduce crash and injury risks, pedestrians are advised to be predictable by using crosswalks, staying aware of approaching vehicles, and avoiding stepping into a vehicle’s path—where a driver traveling at 30 mph needs at least 90 feet to stop. Visibility is key, especially at dawn, dusk, or night, with recommendations to wear light colors, reflective materials, and carry a flashlight, while exercising extra caution on busy or poorly lit streets.
Drivers are encouraged to avoid speeding, slow down at intersections, and stop for pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks, including between intersections. They should avoid blocking crosswalks during right-hand turns and never drive impaired.
Bicyclists are urged to follow traffic laws, use hand signals, equip bikes with front white lights and rear red reflectors at night, and wear helmets. They must ride with traffic, avoid parked car door zones, use bike lanes when available unless turning or passing, and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks or at intersections.
