St. Monica Loses (Again) This Time to St. Anthony:

Last season, St. Monica’s football team was short on talent and not very competitive while losing every game.

This season the Mariners are 0-8, but have been handled easily only twice.

“It’s a different kind of frustrating,” said St. Monica coach Sean Ritter. “At times I think we’re so close.”

Following a 20-7 loss to St. Anthony of Long Beach on October 31, the Mariners have only one more chance to avoid another winless season. They’ll have a bye, then will complete their schedule at Salesian High on November 14.

Hector Sanfiesteban ran for 146 yards on 27 carries, boosting his season yardage total beyond 800; he also played defensive back. Quarterback Joe Giesregen barely missed on two long passes.

Ritter said Sam Holguin, who is expected to be St. Monica’s quarterback next season, was outstanding at receiver.
