Complimented by a backdrop of legendary Mustang race cars, Ford revealed the new 2010 Mustang coupes and convertible in front of a crowd of over 1,000 Mustang Club of America members at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. Ron Davis, President and G.M. of Santa Monica Ford, was effusive in his praise for the sleek new line of the American classic. “I was blown away by the excitement of the new cars. I’ve been in the business for 35 years, and I’m amazed by the improvements in style and performance, both aesthetic and functional. The new line will be very appealing to a wide range of buyers,” he said.
Power comes via previous Mustangs’ SOHC 4.6L flagship engine, now featuring all of the upgrades previously available only on the limited-edition Bullitt Mustang, for a modest bump to 315hp on regular gasoline (performance is slightly better using premium gas).
Also available is the EcoBoost: a 3.5L, V6 twin-turbo, the first Mustang with factory-installed turbos bolted to a manifold since the 1986 SVO. The EcoBoost should reach 415 horsepower in top form, while getting better fuel economy than the 4.6L. A normally aspirated V6 is also available.
Styling improvements include a scrapping of the “craplastic” interiors, a new front grill, one-piece headlights with integrated turn signals, and a new “powerdome” hood that Ford says will aid in engine cooling.
Reviews of the new line have been positive, and Ford anticipates brisk sales, hoping to keep the faithful and lure new converts into the Mustang fold.
