Several former baseball stars from high schools in Santa Monica are doing well at West Los Angeles.
This is the third year of baseball at West LA following a 21-year absence.
Jose Campos, playing third base, is batting .450 with a home run and five RBI in Western State Conference games. In one game he was four-for-five and drove in four runs.
Drew Hammond, the closer at Samohi last season, is doing the same job at West LA. He successfully closed a recent victory over Bakersfield.
For two seasons West LA coach Bob Grant has called outfielder Eric Scott one of his best pro prospects. Scouts have regularly attended West LA games to see the speedy Scott, who formerly played at New Roads.
Pitching has been a problem for West LA, which has lost several close games.
The team’s best pitcher, Gabriel Asalira, was recently hit in the face by a line drive and was hospitalized for three days He won’t pitch again this season.
