Verdugo’s Latest Honor is The Best:

In a season of unprecedented success and honors, the best was saved for last.

Santa Monica High girls basketball coach Marty Verdugo, who had already been recognized for his accomplishments at the league and CIF levels, has been named California Division 1 Coach of the year.

Verdugo guided Santa Monica to the first CIF championship in girls basketball in school history.

In addition, it is believed this is Samohi’s first CIF championship in any girls sport. Volleyball coach Leanne Saito recalls Samohi won the state in volleyball one year, but didn’t win the CIF that season.

“This is a complete surprise but I’m very pleased,” said Verdugo. “A  coach is only as good as the people around him.”
