Alert: Police Blotter:

Blade Runner

On Thursday, Dec. 23, at 11:04 a.m., officers went to the Vons market located at 700 Broadway, in response to a report of a man holding a knife in a threatening manner. The victim, a Vons employee, said the suspect entered the store and was recognized by the sharp-eyed employee as a person who had previously stolen from the store. The employee approached this man, cut to the chase, and pointedly requested that the man leave the store. As they both exited the store, the man suddenly swung around, removed a knife from inside his jacket, and brandished it at the employee. The man then started yelling at the employee in a threatening manner. After doing this, the man left the location. The incisive officers went in search of this man, and immediately located him a short distance away. The officers charged this “blade runner,” a 57-year-old Santa Monica transient, with carrying a concealed weapon, brandishing said weapon, and a parole violation. To be blunt, he was not eligible for bail.

My Name Is Doe, John Doe

On Friday, Dec. 31, at 8:10 p.m., officers arrived at the 1000 block of Pico Boulevard in response to a complaint, to find a downed subject who stood up, but was unable to sustain a vertical position without the assistance of a nearby parking meter. The subject exhibited signs of extreme intoxication. The officers concluded from this evidence that this man, a 27-year-old, was not able, because of his drunken state, to look after himself. So they arrested him, and he was charged with public intoxication. Officers were unable to obtain a name to correspond with this man, so for the sake of the booking process he was listed as John Doe. His bail was set at $250.

Right Way Was The Wrong Way

On Saturday, Jan. 1, at 3:39 p.m., officers observed a vehicle stopped at a traffic light at the 1000 block of Ocean Avenue. The officers, who were behind the vehicle, noticed that it had then begun to head into the bicycle lane, attempting to make a right turn. That would not have been much to stir suspicion, except that in doing so this vehicle had cut off a pedestrian, and also a cyclist. By the time the light had turned to green, the vehicle was unable to make the right turn because by then another vehicle had entered the turn lane, and was in the way, so the driver continued straight through the intersection.

The officers followed this vehicle and witnessed it commit two more vehicle code violations. The officers stopped this vehicle in the 1000 block of Second Street. The officers spoke with the driver and noticed that her speech was thick and slurred. She did not, however, emit an odor of alcohol, so the officers suspected another form of intoxicant. They investigated, and discovered that this woman had taken prescription drugs prior to driving. The officers had her perform a series of balance and coordination tests, which she failed so the officers arrested this 61-year-old female, from Topanga, and charged her with driving while impaired. Her bail was set at $15,000.
