SAN GABRIEL – After a league title and a playoff win, the St. Monica Mariners boys’ volleyball team was eliminated from the CIF playoffs on Thursday.
But they showed a valiant effort before departing.
The San Gabriel Academy Eagles won the first two games, putting St. Monica against the wall. St. Monica’s Tanner Peach led the Mariners back into the match and the Mariners took the next two games.
It came down to the deciding fifth game.
“We went cold,” said St. Monica coach Javy Martinez. “We had a lead in every game and couldn’t pass.”
San Gabriel took advantage and ended the Mariners’ season. Peach led St. Monica with a season-high 26 kills.
“Tanner was on fire,” Martinez said. “He had his way with that team. It was a great season, but a tough, tough loss.”
The Mariners finish the season 14-9 with a league championship and a playoff win to take into next season.
