Woman Tries to Use EBT Card at Denny’s, Arrested: APB: Food Stamps Out

Santa Monica Police Department arrest a woman at a Denny’s after she tried to use a welfare credit card to pay for a meal, then attempted to assault the manager.

On Thursday, May 26, at 1:19 a.m. officers went to the Denny’s restaurant located at 1560 Lincoln Boulevard in response to a report of an attempted assault on an employee by a diner. The officers arrived at the restaurant and spoke with the manager, who was the victim in this case.

The manager told the officers that the suspect, a woman, had entered the restaurant and ordered a meal. The woman had then completed the meal and had been presented with the bill in the customary fashion. The woman had then gone to the register with the bill, but when she arrived, instead of paying for the meal in the usual way, she had informed the manager that she did not have any money with which to settle the check, but that she did have food stamps in the form of an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. The manager had informed the woman that Denny’s did not accept this method of payment, and as he held on to the card while he called the police, the woman had attempted to strike him.

The officers arrested the woman under a private person’s arrest, and this 42-year-old homeless woman in Santa Monica was charged with defrauding an innkeeper. Her bail was set at $500.
