On Sunday, Nov. 13, at 7:09 a.m. officers of the Santa Monica Police Department went to the area of Ninth Street and Pico Boulevard in order to investigate a report of a disturbance. When the officers arrived at the scene they spoke with the victim, a woman, who explained to them that she had first met the suspect, a man, in downtown Los Angeles on Nov. 4, 2011. She had agreed to stay with him at his home because she was homeless at the time. On Saturday, Nov. 4, the man had begun to make certain “demands” of the woman, and this had resulted in an argument, an argument of such duration that it was still continuing the next morning, in other words an all-night argument. Fast forward to about 6 a.m. on the morning of Nov. 13, 2011 when the woman attempted to exit the residence, but was stopped because the sliding glass door was jammed. The man refused to allow her to leave, and when the woman picked up her cell phone, he grabbed it from her hands. After a while the man opened the sliding glass door and said that he would drive her back to Los Angeles. The victim told the officers that they had begun the journey, but she had noticed that he was driving westbound on Pico Boulevard, which was the opposite direction to Los Angeles. The woman had then leapt from the vehicle when an opportunity presented itself at Ninth Street, and was assisted by several witnesses. The officers were able to locate and arrest this 67-year-old Santa Monica resident and he was charged with robbery and false imprisonment. His bail was set at $50,000.
