Dr. Mao’s Wellness Living: Summer Beauty Tips To Keep Your Skin Glowing:

As the heat wave continues, you may find that your skin and hair suffer the effects of extreme temperatures. As much as you love to sip that seaside beverage or enjoy a cool dip in your neighbor’s pool, it is important to pay attention to changes in your hair and skin. Follow these natural tips so you can be sure your locks are always looking lovely and that your skin is glowing all summer long!

Don’t Sweat It

The human body has more than 2.5 million sweat glands, which is never more noticeable than during the hot summer months! Humidity and high temperatures make it difficult to stay cool and perspiration-free. As a result, you may find that your skin is breaking out more than usual. Break outs occur when our sweat mixes with our body’s bacteria, and often show up with more frequency during the summer months. To keep yourself cooler, wear lighter colors to reflect the sun and spend time indoors in fanned and air-conditioned rooms.

It is best to avoid wearing nylon and lycra. Those fabrics trap moisture and heat against your skin, which can foster bacterial growth. Loose-fitting cotton is a better option, as that fabric will allow your skin to breathe. Garments that are too tight may cause more friction against your skin, so you may want to opt for clothes with more fluidity.

Go Natural!

You may want to think twice before applying that concealer. The sweat may create streaks of make-up running down your face, which will only hide your natural beauty while also clogging your pores. Try going makeup free this summer and allow your skin to breathe. If however, you can’t leave your house without applying your favorite makeup, choose a skin-friendly brand, such as Jane Iredale, and pick a lighter coverage product with an SPF of at least 15 to keep you wrinkle-free and happy.

Bonus Tip: Try my Exquisite Skin blend of special Chinese herbs, a formula that will nourish your skin and help you remove unwanted blemishes.

Summer Snacking Tips

In addition to cosmetic choices, the foods you consume will also affect your skin’s health. A diet of oily fish, olives, flaxseed oils, nuts, seeds, and fresh berries, along with a healthy amount of water will keep your skin glowing and hydrated in the heat of summer. Limit added sugars, fried foods, salt, and most processed foods, as these will only make your skin sallow and prone to inflammation. Sipping on cool water throughout the day will keep you from overheating. Antioxidants in foods like green tea and vitamin C-rich foods prevent free radicals from attacking your skin, helping you hold onto your youthful complexion.

Love Your Locks

If your strands are starting to feel dry and coarse, take a rain check from the water! Chlorine’s harsh compounds can dry out your hair, while the salty ocean water can have your follicles tangled in knots. If you choose to wet your hair, make sure to apply a natural conditioner to your scalp to prevent your locks from drying out. Tie a pretty scarf around your hair or wear a hat to protect your strands from the sun’s rays. Also, avoid washing your hair with synthetic products that will strip away natural, protective oils. Whenever possible, opt for natural, organic products.

Burnout!

That sun-kissed look may give you a beautiful glow, but eventually those rosy cheeks may develop unwanted sun spots. Whether under clouds or out in sunshine, always protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays by wearing an SPF of at least 15. Pay attention to commonly missed spots like your neck, chest, and the backs of your hands, particularly when you’re driving.

Even when wearing sunscreen, you should still opt for long sleeved shirts, and protective sunglasses and hats. Keep in mind, throwing on a t-shirt in the direct sun may not protect you as much as you think. Fabrics actually have UPF ratings that measure their UV protection levels, and a rating of 30 is awarded the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation. Keep in mind that a plain white tee comes in under 10! If you do happen to burn yourself, try placing a cold, peeled aloe leaf onto the burned area for relief.

May you live long, live strong, and live happy!
