Last season the Santa Monica High softball team won the league championship and a first round playoff game before losing to La Mirada, which went on to the playoff finals.
The squad is having similar success this season, the 17th for Coach Debbie Skaggs.
Santa Monica swept two showdown games from Culver City last week and has an 8-0 record in the Ocean League.
Both teams had 6-0 league records, but Samohi won at home Tuesday, 4-0 and then went to Culver Thursday and won again, 9-4.
Samohi won seven straight games, lost a non-league game to El Segundo, then won two more for nine wins in the last 10 games.
The surge brought the overall record to 14-8 and coincides with a similar breakout by the school’s baseball team, which is also 8-0 in league play.
“We’ve had outstanding play from a large number of contributers,’’ said Skaggs.
The coach mentioned Tyra Maxwell, Christine Foley and Kelsey Thomas, all juniors, and senior Amanda Aguirre, who hit one of the longest home runs in the years Skaggs has been the coach.
Maxwell pitched a complete game in the first win over Culver and Foley had a double.
“We made some position changes during the season and that really helped,’’ said Skaggs.
Foley, who began the season at third base, became the catcher. Junior Lana Bowie moved from catcher to shortstop.
Several key players will return next season, when Samohi is likely to be strong again. The group includes sophomore Hannah Peters.Samohi will conclude its regular season schedule with two games against Hawthorne this week, then will await news of its first round playoff opponent.
