Cops Say Female Driver, 40, Ran Red Light In Accident Near Santa Monica Place:

Santa Monica police say the female driver who struck a pedestrian in the 300 block of Colorado Avenue near Santa Monica Place on Wednesday morning ran a red light.

Santa Monica Police Department Sgt. Richard Lewis said the 40-year-old female driver was driving eastbound in the number one lane when she struck a woman aged in her 20s crossing the road at 10:50 a.m.

Lewis said the female victim was walking northbound in the crosswalk towards Santa Monica Place while the green walk symbol was being displayed when she was hit.

Lewis said its traffic investigators had not yet determined whether the driver would face any charges as she is cooperating with police.

Lewis said the victim was expected to recover after being rushed to a local trauma center where she was treated for head and other body injuries.

Colorado was closed for about four hours between Main and 4th Street while detectives investigated the accident.

The accident comes just months after Westchester resident Cara Cameron struck and killed Australian tourist Gary Mara along the same stretch of Colorado Avenue on Aug. 21.

Mara, along with his wife Julianne and eight-year-old daughter Olivia, were at the north sidewalk on the 300 block of Colorado near Santa Monica Place at the pedestrian crosswalk at 8:15 p.m. and started to cross despite the solid red “Don’t Walk” sign.

Mara was struck by Cameron’s vehicle being driven eastbound on Colorado Avenue. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after the collision.

Following an investigation, Cameron was arrested for driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter.

Cameron now faces three charges, including driving under the influence, vehicular manslaughter, and one count of murder as a result of her previous 2007 conviction for an alcohol-related traffic collision.
