Prep basketball revs up for local teams: St. Monica Tournament features array of teams

Now that football season and the rest of fall sports are winding down, basketball is coming right in on time. That’s good news for local teams. St. Monica has already kicked off its season, rendering a 64-45 win against Malibu.

The Mariners recorded their first win of the season on Tuesday on the road. After scoring just 12 points in the first quarter, St. Monica essentially put the game away in the second period. The Mariners outscored Malibu 26-7 in the second quarter to open up the game by taking a 38-12 lead into halftime.

The Mariners scored just 26 points the rest of the game, but had already done their damage to notch the win. St. Monica is not scheduled to play again until they go up against an array of local teams in the touted St. Monica Tournament, beginning Dec. 2.

So far, St. Monica is scheduled to play Newbury Park, New Designs and University during the tournament. After that the Mariners take on Palos Verdes at the El Segundo Tournament. Samohi will be playing in the El Segundo Tournament, going up against Mira Costa.

The Vikings began Ocean League play when they take on Inglewood on Jan. 15.
