El Segundo Routs St. Monica, 47-0:

A year ago, St. Monica won a close football game from El Segundo. Preparing for the rematch, Mariner Coach Jason Strouse felt the opponent would be focused and ready for a big effort.

He was right. El Segundo won the non-league game last Friday night, 47-0 at St. Bernard High.

“They dominated us,” said Strouse. “It was very one-sided, but you go on and prepare for the next game. Whether you lose by one point or a lot of points it counts the same – one loss.

St. Monica crossed the 50-yard-line only once and couldn’t stop Eagle running back Kris Afmore, who had a school record 254 yards and six touchdowns.

Meanwhile, St. Monica’s star running back Vince Valdez was hampered by the flu.

St. Monica won its opening game from Bishop Montgomery, 22-20.St, Monica will have another difficult test this Friday. Its opponent will be Campbell-Hall, one of the highest-ranked teams in CIF Division 13. The following Friday, St. Monica will play Santa Monica.
