The filing period for candidates seeking a seat on the City Council or one of Santa Monica’s three other boards has not yet closed, but that has not prevented one of the largest political parties in Bay City from holding its 2014 Convention this weekend.
Santa Monicans for Renters’ Rights will hold its election-year convention this Sunday, Aug. 3 at the cafeteria of John Adams Middle School to determine whom to support in the Nov. 4 general election, with members voting which slate of candidates they will campaign for during the next three months.
In addition to endorsing three candidates for City Council, SMRR will also select whom it will campaign for in races of Rent Control Board, Santa Monica College Board of Trustee, Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education, and the 33rd Congressional District seat.
The convention begins at 12:45 pm.
In addition to endorsing candidates, SMRR’s voting membership will also take positions on local initiatives to be placed on the Nov. 4 ballot.
SMRR members interviewed candidates of the five major races on July 26 and July 29.
As of publication time, only three City Council candidates have been qualified for the Nov. 4 ballot, according to the City of Santa Monica’s election website smvote.org: Kevin McKeown, Phil Brock, and Sue Himmelrich.
Richard McKinnon and Jerry Rubin have filed their nomination papers, but have’t yet been qualified for the ballot, according to the City’s election website.
