Santa Monica College Public Policy Institute Kicks Off Week-Long Symposium:

Santa Monica College Public Policy Institute will host its 4th Annual Spring Symposium Kickoff Reception today, May 11, from 5:30 pm to 7 pm. It will be held at The Broad Stage’s SMC Performing Arts Center located at 1310 11th Street, Santa Monica.

It will be followed by a keynote address by L.A. County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl on “The State of Public and Mental Health in Los Angeles County.”

The theme of the week-long Public Policy Institute 4th Annual Symposium is “Stop, Look, Listen: Community Advocacy For Public Health.”

The state of public and mental health in Los Angeles County will be presented by L.A. County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl (3rd District). An audience back-and-forth will follow.

Film & Roundtable Discussion: Sex in College

Attend a screening of SMC student film on sexual assault, and a discussion—led by panelists from the Rape Treatment Center, SMC “Consent Month,” and Planned Parenthood LA—on new laws, new ways of communicating, and age-old advice for healthy relationships.

Can Mainstream Entertainment Affect Public Policy?

The SMC Public Policy Institute presents “Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me,” the compelling documentary of the music legend’s unprecedented tour across America after receiving the devastating Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Post-screening discussion with producer Trevor Albert addresses leveraging the medium of film as a stimulus for how public policy and entertainment co-exist and can provoke activism.

Propelling Public Awareness To Advocate For Changes, Featuring Critically Acclaimed Film “Still Alice”

Examine early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and find out how advocates are fighting for a cure at this special screening of the film Still Alice—starring Julianne Moore in her Oscar winning role and based on the New York Times bestselling novel by Neuroscientist Lisa Genova.

Immediately following the film, join us for a riveting roundtable with special guests including State Senator Ben Allen and moderated by the film’s co-producer and Alzheimer’s advocate Elizabeth Gelfand Stearns. The panel will discuss how public policy and the entertainment industry together can foster policy change.
