Nature-Inspired Art To Go On Display At LAX Through Next June:

Los Angeles International Airport.

A pair of nature-inspired artworks will be on display at Los Angeles International Airport through next June, airport officials announced today.

The works by artists Pontus Willfors and Cathy Weiss can be viewed in the arrivals level hallways of Terminal 3, which houses gates for JetBlue, Spirit, Virgin America, Allegiant Air, Boutique Air and Frontier.

Willfors’ piece, titled “Douglas Fir Reclaimed,” is constructed out of more than 400 wooden planks taken from a torn-down building in Los Angeles and lined up next to each other to form the canvas for a chiseled image of a Douglas Fir tree.

Willfors said his work “is an attempt to see not only the beauty of the tree, but the material — the knots, the aging in the lines, the hardness and its common utilization for construction.”

Weiss’ “Laurel Canyon, Chaparral Habitat: Native Flora and Fauna” features woodcut prints depicting pairings of an animal with a native plant.

“These pairings illustrate the biodiversity of the Santa Monica Mountains, one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world,” Weiss said.
