When the California Heritage Museum’s current exhibition, “Behold, the Pacific! California Coast Views,” closes on Sunday, February 26, the paintings will be returned to their respective private collections, and may not be publicly displayed again for years. Owing to its significance and popularity, the exhibition run has been extended once, and cannot be extended again. The paintings in “Behold!” date from 1860 to 1973 and range from native nineteenth century views of San Francisco Bay through California Impressionism, Tonalism and Luminism, to the Group of Eight and the surfing paintings of the sixties, and, taken together, constitute a kind of survey of the ways different artists and diverse art movements have tried to capture the unique light and color of the storied California coast. Among the artists with works in the exhibition are Marion Kavanaugh Wachtel, William Wendt, Granville Redmond, August Francois Gay and Phil Dike.California Heritage Museum at 2612 Main Street in Santa Monica is open Wednesday through Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Phone (310) 392- 8537.
