Several premier high school softball players were on the same field last Friday. However, Santa Monica High made sure the outcome of its non-league home game against New Roads would be decided quickly. Hannah-Rose Peters blazed her fastball past the game’s first three hitters, throwing to all-CIF catcher Christine Foley. Then the Vikings came to bat and scored six runs before New Roads pitching star Stephanie Carrillo entered the game as a reliever.Samohi went on to a 7-1 victory.Peters, who bats cleanup, drove in the game’s first two runs with a triple over the centerfielder’s head. Samohi scored twice more, then Lana Bowie singled to make it 5-0 and a throwing error brought home another run.Once Carrillo came in the Vikings couldn’t mount much more offense. Carrillo, who throws as hard as Peters, is the Jaguars’ ace and has a scholarship to an Eastern college. There were no more runs until the sixth inning when New Roads shortstop Ana Ramirez singled and circled the bases on errors. Ramirez, a graceful shortstop with a strong arm, was the game’s defensive star. She also excels in volleyball.Samohi scored its final run and its only run off Carrillo on Peters’ sharp single into left field in the bottom of the sixth.Samohi came back from a 4-0 loss to powerful Oaks Christian the previous day. Through six innings in that contest there was only one hit. But Samohi committed three errors in the seventh, allowing the game’s only runs to score.Samohi completed the week with a 5-2 record. The results included a 5-2 win over Oxnard, a 2-1 loss to Torrance followed by a 1-0 win in the second game of the doubleheader, a 6-1 win over Redondo and a 6-2 win over Oxnard.Peters, who is batting .412, has pitched all five victories. She has one loss, as does sophomore Alyson Herman. Peters has pitched 41 innings, has a 1.1 earned run average and has struck out 49 batters.New Roads, which has a couple of 8-0 shutouts on its record and a victory over Malibu, is 3-2.Samohi is without senior pitcher Tyra Maxwell, who is still in school but has decided not to play this season. Bowie, who began last season as the team’s catcher, then made a successful move to shortstop, now plays centerfield.
