New SMC President Tsang Feted at St. Anne’s:

Santa Monica College greeted its new president, Dr. Chui L. Tsang, with an event co-hosted by St. Anne Support Council.

Dr. Tsang, now finishing his first semester with the college, was previously president of San Jose City College and, before that, a Dean at the City College of San Francisco. He has a BA from UC Berkeley and a doctorate from Stanford University. For his new position at SMC, Dr. Tsang says, “One of the goals I’ve set for our institution is to become a real partner in the community. St. Anne’s is in our community. We need to form a strong partnership with high schools, the local unified school district, city government and high schools in other communities that send students to us.”

In addition to welcoming President Tsang, the goal of the event sponsors was to bring attention to the plight of St. Anne School. The school gives private Catholic education to the neediest in the community, at approximately half the cost of the area’s other private schools. The St. Anne Support Council, established earlier this year, has already raised $30,000 but needs another $30,000 to save the school. Unlike other Catholic schools that serve low-income families, St. Anne School doesn’t qualify for aid from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles because there is a high median income for the area.
