Best Jobs for Women 50+ in Gig Economy

These days, it seems like we can do practically anything with our smartphones, from booking plane tickets to video chatting to online shopping.

We can even find jobs through our phones, too, thanks to a few helpful apps. These “gig economy” jobs are especially popular with Millennials.

Studies that most of the gig economy or “alternative workforce” is made up of “them,” but don’t let the 20-somethings be the only ones earning a little extra cash! Many of these jobs are perfect for us, the 50-plus workforce, whether you’re retired (I wish) or still working a traditional 9-5. These types of jobs are flexible and can work with any schedule, and it’s never been easier to find them and make money. Below are a few of my favorites:

Dog Walking

I am an animal freak, so this job would be my dream job. We all know how important a little exercise is to keep us in shape as we age (that’s why originally adopted Zoey.) What better way to get some steps in than by dog walking – and getting paid for it!

Apps like Wag and Rover connect you to pet-owners in your area who are willing to pay someone to walk Fido and Fifi for a few hours everyday, or to watch them over a weekend. I love animals so much that I often volunteer to pet sit, so earning money while doing so is just an added bonus.

Kiddie Carpool

There is a new service available in town called Kango that is a perfect way for empty nesters to earn some additional income. It is a ridesharing service, like Uber or Lyft, but only for kids. It’s available throughout the greater Los Angeles area, and you’ll be helping busy parents out by taking children to and from school or other activities, while earning at least $35/hour.

It does require a thorough screening process, but that only means the company cares about the safety of its riders and drivers. If you’ve thought about a ridesharing job, but were worried about unsavory or unruly adult passengers, this is a much better option both safety-wise and money-wise.

With Kango, you can set your own schedule and you can even work with the same families on a regular basis. Plus, we all know how little ones can warm the heart – especially if you’re far from your own kids or grandchildren – which is probably why so many women over 50, who are also retired teachers jobs choose to drive for the service.

I never had kids, or grandkids. This would be a good way to get the “kid fix” by driving them around for a few hours and returning ‘em back to their parents. Perfect amount of time.

Grocery Shopping

Did you know that we’ve gone so digital that some people order their groceries through an app instead of going to the store? Luckily for job-seekers, this makes for an easy and financially rewarding job. With apps like Instacart, you simply shop the aisles and drop off the goods.

The only issue for you ladies to lookout for is that you should be able to do some occasional heavy lifting, as some people might have heavy orders, so I advise checking with your doctor if you are unsure of the physical aspect of this job. You can also shop for yourself, and cross that off your to-do list at the same time!

Crafting

If you knit, sew, paint or have an otherwise creative hobby, there is very real earning potential thanks to websites like Etsy.

Etsy is where you can set up an online marketplace for your handmade wares, whether you have an abundance to sell or just a few pieces. You can also make money doing custom orders for people interested in your craft.

I’ve personally seen jewelry, stationary, blankets, clothing and many different art mediums for sale on the site, but the options of what to sell are almost limitless. There is an app just for sellers, which means you can manage your business on-the-go, even if you are on vacation or have another day job. I’m going to sell my photographs and floral greeting cards online.

There are many different ways to earn money, but as we get older it’s important to spend our time where it matters most. When you’re looking for work, choose something that aligns with your interests and that you will enjoy.

Do work a different “gig economy job” not on this list?

Leave me a note in the comments – we love hearing about new opportunities.
