An officer-involved shooting that ended in a possible death by suicide occurred Sunday night in the Ocean Park neighborhood of Santa Monica.
According to the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) on October 20, 2019 at 11:50 pm, SMPD officers were in the area of Ocean Avenue and Bicknell Avenue when they heard two gunshots coming from the area of the 000 block of Bay Street. Officers respond to the area to investigate and were directed to a male subject who had just shot into an occupied vehicle. According to the SMPD, officers made contact with the suspect who failed to comply with commands. The suspect fled on foot, running southwest onto the sand. Officers engaged in a foot pursuit when the suspect produced a handgun and an officer-involved shooting occurred.
The SMPD says a preliminary investigation indicates the suspect suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect was pronounced at the scene.
Victims inside the occupied vehicle were not struck by gunfire or injured in the incident, according to the SMPD.
The investigation is still ongoing and the SMPD says there is no more information currently available.
“There will be no Press Information Officer to speak on this today. Information in the press releases will be all the information we are providing at this time. The attempted murder investigation/officer involved shooting/suicide is an on-going investigation,” said SMPD Lieutenant Candice Cobarrubias.
