SMC Holding HBCU Events Through October

The Events Emphasize Pathways for Students to Historically Black Colleges and Universities

This fall, Santa Monica College invites the community to a series of events that emphasize pathways for community college students to Historically Black Colleges and Universities. These events are open to all interested attendees, regardless of their enrollment status at SMC. The series culminates with an “HBCU Caravan” on Thursday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., hosted on The Quad at SMC’s main campus, located at 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica.

For detailed information and event updates, visit smc.edu/HBCU.

  • HBCU Indaba (‘Indaba’ is a word in Zulu and Xhosa cultures that means a “meeting”): This event is a day of learning from HBCU graduates and professionals trained at HBCUs. SMC Black Collegians counselors will be available to assist with the application process. The event will be held on Thursday, Oct. 19, from 11:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Student Services Center Orientation Hall (S183) on SMC’s Main Campus. RSVPs are required by Oct. 13.
  • HBCU Transfer Workshops: SMC will conduct two virtual workshops where students can learn more about the benefits of attending an HBCU and how SMC students can secure guaranteed admission to various participating institutions. Registration is required via smc.edu/HBCU. The virtual workshops are scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 24, and Thursday, Nov. 16, both from 3:45 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • CCC to HBCU Caravan: For the first time, SMC will host the “HBCU Caravan,” an HBCU college fair where representatives will be available to answer questions about their academic programs and college life. Some colleges may even offer onsite admissions; interested students should have multiple copies of unofficial transcripts available to share with the representatives. Lunch will be served while supplies last. This event will take place on Thursday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at The Quad on SMC’s Main Campus.

For more information about HBCU events, visit smc.edu/hbcu or contact Janet Robinson, SMC Transfer Center Faculty Leader, at Robinson_Janet@smc.edu.
