November 6 Updates: Malibu Holds Fire at 50 Acres as Schools Close, PCH Reopens

Crews Contain Brush Fire, Closures In Effect, Power Outages in Malibu

The city of Malibu’s website has issued an update on November 6 as of 3:00 p.m.:

Forward progress held at 50 acres on brush fire at Malibu Cyn & PCH in Malibu (started at 9:00 a.m.). No active flames, crews remain doing mop-up to prevent flare-ups. Three structures were damaged. High winds continue. A shelter-in-place was ordered for Malibu Rd from Webb Way west to PCH (lifted at 12:30 PM).

All lanes of PCH are open, after the earlier closure of Webb Way to Corral Cyn. Malibu Canyon and Malibu Road are open after earlier closures.

Southern California Edison (SCE) has shut off power in much of western Malibu. Visit SCE.com/PSPS for outage status updates. The emergency operation center at Malibu City Hall has been activated at its lowest level and staffed 24 hrs. for the duration of the wind event.

City Hall is currently closed to the public. Additionally, the Senior Center, Community Center at Bluffs Park, swimming pool, and all parks are closed until further notice. In an abundance of caution, all scheduled public meetings, programs, and events are also suspended.

Messaging on all city social media channels except for City Government and Public Safety accounts has been suspended. All messaging will be limited to main City social media accounts.  All City emergency information is posted on social media and the website. The Mayor of Malibu, Doug Stewart, released a video update today. You can watch it here:

The Santa Monica Malibu School District has shared a letter from Isaac Burgess, Executive Director, of Malibu Pathway, detailing the closure of the Malibu School District tomorrow.

Dear Malibu Staff and Families,

Due to strong winds and hazardous fire conditions, power outages, and potential road closures, all four Malibu schools will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024. All programs at Webster Elementary, Malibu Elementary, Malibu Middle, and Malibu High are affected. The Malibu Boys & Girls Club will be closed and all campus activities and events are canceled for the day.

We hope you and your family members and property are weathering these conditions well. We are sensitive to and understand the unique concerns in Malibu.

The safety and health of our students and staff are our top priorities. We never take the decision to close schools lightly as we value the continuity of learning. We understand the impact it has on our students and families. It is disruptive and presents a challenge for everyone.

I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for your patience and adaptability as we navigate through various weather conditions in Malibu throughout the year. Please take extra care in your travels around our community and beyond.

We will communicate plans for Friday, tomorrow in the early evening. This weather event is expected through tomorrow evening, however, we want to ensure power has been restored, and roads are accessible before a decision is made regarding school on Friday.

You may follow the City of Malibu alerts at www.malibucity.org and Malibu Radio KBUU at www.RadioMalibu.net for updated information regarding Malibu roads, weather, surf, and conditions.

Sincerely,

Mr. Isaac Burgess, Executive Director, Malibu Pathway
