Utility Work for East Valley Light Rail Project to Bring Months of Closures

The work will take place from Jan. 26 through June 22 along Van Nuys Boulevard

Utility relocation work for Metro’s East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Project will require intermittent, one-directional traffic closures along a stretch of Van Nuys Boulevard for roughly six months beginning later this month, transportation officials said.

The work will take place from Jan. 26 through June 22, along Van Nuys Boulevard between Sherman Way and Arminta Street. During construction, the street will be closed in one direction at a time, with the opposite direction remaining open under lane restrictions. Van Nuys Boulevard will be fully reopened during non-working hours.

Metro said motorists should expect nighttime and weekend traffic delays, particularly near cross streets including Wyandotte, Valerio, Covello, Saticoy and Keswick streets, where temporary closures may occur.

Northbound lane closures are scheduled from Jan. 26 to Feb. 9, followed by southbound closures from Feb. 9 to March 9. Additional northbound closures are planned from March 9 through June 22. Work hours will generally run from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays and from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends.

During closures, traffic will be detoured using nearby major streets. Northbound traffic will be routed from Sherman Way to Woodman Avenue, then to Roscoe Boulevard before rejoining Van Nuys Boulevard. Southbound traffic will be detoured from Sherman Way to Sepulveda Boulevard, then to Roscoe Boulevard.

Street parking will be temporarily removed along the west side of Van Nuys Boulevard to accommodate construction activity during night and weekend hours. Flaggers will be stationed at various locations to help direct traffic and pedestrian access, particularly near local businesses.

Metro officials said the Van Nuys Metrolink and Amtrak station will remain open and accessible throughout construction, and passenger parking will continue to be available. Bus service will also continue, though temporary bus stop relocations and detours will affect Metro Bus Lines 169, 233 and 761, as well as the LADOT Dash, depending on the time of day.

Access for emergency responders will be maintained at all times, and Metro said noise and dust control measures will be implemented to minimize impacts on nearby neighborhoods.

The $3.57 billion East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Project will feature a 6.7-mile, at-grade alignment running in the center of Van Nuys Boulevard from the Metro G Line Van Nuys Station to San Fernando Road. The line is expected to connect riders with Metrolink, Amtrak, the Metro B Line and other regional transit services when it opens, which is anticipated in 2031.

Metro said it offers mitigation programs to support small businesses affected by construction. More information about the project is available at metro.net/eastsfv.
