Los Angeles County braces for a dangerous heat wave with temperatures 20–30 degrees above normal

National Weather Service warns of a high risk for heat illness on Thursday and Friday as record-breaking March temperatures hit the region.

Dangerous heat is expected across the Los Angeles region this week, with forecasters warning that conditions could pose a high risk for heat-related illness, particularly on Thursday and Friday.

The National Weather Service in Los Angeles said temperatures from Wednesday through Saturday could run 20 to 30 degrees above normal, with several locations likely to break daily records. Some areas could even challenge all-time temperature records for March, according to the forecast.

NWS has issued a heat advisory for Thursday at 10 a.m. and Friday at 8 p.m. and recommends limiting outdoor exertion between those hours daily when temperatures are expected to peak.

Health officials warn that the unusually warm conditions increase the likelihood of heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses, especially for vulnerable populations. Areas affected include the Western Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area, Eastern Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area, and the cities of Compton, Pacific Palisades, Hollywood, Santa Monica, Malibu Bowl, LAX, Culver City, Beverly Hills, and Malibu.

Forecasters expect the most intense heat to occur on Thursday and Friday, with temperatures predicted to be between 96 and 98 degrees, and elevated temperatures are projected to continue well above seasonal averages into next week.

Residents are urged to adjust their schedules and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day.

Officials also encourage people to stay hydrated, seek shade or air-conditioned spaces when possible, and check on elderly neighbors, children, and pets during the heat wave.
