Four LAPD Officers Involved in Shooting Identified; Suspect Shot in Jaw, Stable

Man allegedly pointed BB gun resembling handgun at officers after assault-with-deadly-weapon call.

Four Los Angeles Police Department officers were identified Wednesday in connection with an officer-involved shooting Tuesday morning in the Wilshire area, where a suspect was shot in the jaw after allegedly pointing what appeared to be a handgun at officers.

The officers—Police Officer Christopher Martin, Police Officer Kenneth Rodriguez, Police Officer Josue Toc and Police Officer Alejandro Lopez—were named after Chief Michel authorized the release of their identities, per department policy.

The incident occurred about 6:50 a.m. March 10 at 1826 Alsace Ave. Officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in which the suspect, later identified as Jamil Basheer, allegedly “pulled a gun” on a person who had asked him to turn down his music, according to a preliminary LAPD account.

Officers met with the reporting party, who directed them to Basheer’s residence. After requesting backup, officers attempted to contact Basheer. During the encounter, Basheer produced a handgun, prompting officers to move to the street while giving verbal commands to surrender.

Basheer then exited the front door and ran toward the officers while holding a handgun in his left hand and a knife in his right hand, with the handgun pointed at them, the department said. Officers fired, striking Basheer once. He fell, dropping both weapons, then stood and ran back inside the residence.

Basheer later complied with commands to surrender and was taken into custody without further incident. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics transported him to a hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the jaw and listed in stable condition. He has not yet been booked due to ongoing medical treatment.

Officers recovered a handgun and a 6-inch black folding knife at the scene. The handgun was determined to be a Glock 19–style BB gun loaded with two .177 caliber rounds and a charged CO cartridge. No officers or other community members were injured.
