CHP launches 24-hour statewide speeding crackdown to reduce fatalities on the road

The Maximum Enforcement Period utilizes increased patrols and the new FAST pilot program to target high-speed offenders across California.

California Highway Patrol officers will launch a statewide 24-hour “Maximum Enforcement Period” on Tuesday morning, targeting speeding as part of a concentrated effort to curb rising traffic fatalities.

The operation begins at 6 a.m. on April 28 and will continue through 5:59 a.m. Wednesday. During this window, the CHP is deploying increased patrols to monitor all major roadways, issuing citations to drivers who exceed posted limits or travel at speeds unsafe for current conditions.

Department data highlights the lethal consequences of high-velocity driving. In 2025, CHP officers issued more than 491,000 speeding citations. Preliminary records from the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System indicate that unsafe speeds contributed to over 110,000 crashes last year, resulting in 400 deaths and 68,000 injuries.

The enforcement push coincides with the ongoing pilot of the Forwarded Actions for Speeding Tickets (FAST) program. Launched in December in partnership with the DMV, the initiative streamlines the license suspension process for motorists caught traveling in excess of 100 mph. These high-speed citations are automatically routed to the DMV’s Driver Safety Branch for immediate review.

“Speeding continues to be one of the leading causes of serious and fatal crashes on California’s roadways. When drivers choose to exceed safe speeds, they reduce their ability to react and increase the risk for everyone on the road. Slowing down is one of the simplest steps that drivers can take to protect themselves and others,” stated CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee, in a press release.
