Carol Kaye Bass Clinic

Born into a family of musicians, Carol Kaye has been playing and teaching guitar since 1949. As a jazz guitarist, she played around the Los Angeles club scene of the late-’40s – early-’50s. By the end of the ’50s, though, she had moved into the recording world, first playing with Sam Cooke. After a few years of guitar session work, she moved on to the bass and soon became known as one of the best in the business. Her work can be heard on recordings from the likes of the Beach Boys, Ike and Tina Turner, Ray Charles, and many others. For one night only, this master of the bass will be teaching a free lesson at McCabe’s. Don’t miss it.

The Ash Grove 50th Anniversary

In 1958, The Ash Grove opened on Melrose Avenue, where it was home to some of the finest music in Los Angeles until a fire shut down the venue in 1973. Later on, The Ash Grove became synonymous with event promotion, hosting concerts from Santa Monica to San Pedro. Now, in celebration of its 50th anniversary, artists will gather together in song for two nights at Royce Hall. Scheduled to appear on April 18 are Dave Alvin, Culture Clash, and Holly Near, amongst others. The following night, the Freedom Singers, Taj Mahal, and Michelle Shocked will appear alongside a cast of influential musicians.
