Palisades Tennis Team Loses Tense Final Match:

The Los Angeles City Schools championship match in boy’s tennis, played Friday May 9, was as close as it could be. It came down to a tiebreaker in the final set.

It was then that Taft High defeated Pali, 15 to 14 1/2 at the Balboa Sports Center in Encino.

Freshman Timothy Thornton’s debut in high school tennis was as dramatic as it could be. Playing his first season for Palisades he competed in the deciding set, losing the tiebreaker 7-3 but drawing praise from his opponent for a courageous attempt.

The teams reached the final for the second straight year and again Taft won. In the two preceding years, Pali coach Bud Kling added to his long list of championships.

Oliver Thornton, Timothy’s brother, Brett Allchorn and Kyung Choi all won two sets for Palisades, which finished the season with a 22-3 record.

With team play concluded, the City’s individual tournament will begin.
