Samohi Sophomore Walker Makes All-CIF:

Santa Monica High’s outstanding softball season has been recognized with an array of individual awards.

The most decorated player is sophomore pitcher Selisha Walker, who was chosen MVP of the Ocean League and was the only member of the Lady Vikings to be selected to the all-CIF first team.

Walker had a 13-3 record and 2.2 ERA. She struck out 126 batters in 114 innings and walked only 18.

The next most honored player is sophomore catcher Emma Woo, who shared Ocean League Most Outstanding Player recognition with freshman catcher Gabrielle Valerio of Hawthorne.

Coach Debbie Skaggs’ Samohi team, who went undefeated in league play for the fourth consecutive year, dominated the all-Ocean League selections with four other players on the first team and three on the second.

The first team choices were sophomore shortstop Kaile Nakao, the Vikings’ leading hitter at .433, sophomore first baseman Hailey Sheridan, freshman outfielder Kelsey Hom and sophomore outfielder Holly Elander.

Samohi players named to the all-league second team were junior second baseman Yaneth Guzman, sophomore third baseman Cianna Guerrero and senior pitcher/utility player Alyson Herman, who had a pitching record of 9-3.

With all the Viking honorees except Herman returning, Samohi will again be the league favorite next season.

Most of the players came up from the city’s youth leagues.

Junior Baillie Kirker, a junior infielder at Crescenta Valley High, shared CIF Player of the Year honors with Holly Constendine, a sophomore pitcher at La Serna High. Crescenta Valley defeated Samohi in the third round of the CIF playoffs.Samohi’s overall record was 23-9.
