The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has unanimously appointed Joseph M. Nicchitta as the county’s chief executive officer, effective immediately.

Nicchitta, who had been serving as acting and then interim CEO since October 2025, will oversee the county’s $52.5 billion budget. His responsibilities include managing labor relations with 64 bargaining units representing more than 84,000 employees, federal and state advocacy, and implementation of the Board of Supervisors’ priorities.

Prior to becoming interim CEO, Nicchitta served as chief deputy CEO and chief operating officer starting in 2020. In that role, he helped lead the county’s pandemic response and recovery, including the distribution of more than $2 billion in federal relief funds.

From 2018 to 2020, he was director of the Department of Consumer and Business Affairs, where he worked on rent stabilization policies and small business initiatives. He previously led the county’s Office of Cannabis Management and worked in the Office of County Counsel on land use, environmental and affordable housing issues.

Nicchitta earned a law degree from New York University School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in comparative literature from the University of California, Berkeley.
