‘One SaMo People’s Academy’ will offer six-week course on operations, budgets and policy for 25 residents starting in April
The city of Santa Monica is launching a new six-week civic education program called the One SaMo People’s Academy, inviting residents 18 and older to apply for a chance to learn about local government operations and engagement opportunities.
The program, announced Feb. 25, aims to give participants an inside look at how policies are developed, budgets allocated and services delivered. It is scheduled to meet Thursday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. for six weeks beginning April 30. Applications are due March 16, with 25 participants to be selected.
Topics will include an overview of city government, public safety, infrastructure and sustainability, transportation and land use, and housing and human services. City officials say the academy is designed to build transparency, trust and informed civic participation by reflecting the diversity of the community.
A separate one-day Youth Civic Leadership Day is planned for a later date, with details to be announced.
