Santa Monica Public Library To Host Skype Q&A With Noted Author:

Santa Monica Public Library (SMPL) continues celebrating The Big Read with an author talk and Q&A via Skype with Luis Alberto Urrea this Monday, April 21 at 3 pm in the Main Library Multipurpose Room at 601 Santa Monica Boulevard.

The community of Santa Monica has been reading and discussing the book, “Into the Beautiful North,” as part of The Big Read program and now the author joins the conversation via Skype from his home state of Illinois.

Urrea is the author of fourteen books, a recipient of a 1999 American Book Award (“Nobody’s Son”), a finalist for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize (“The Devil’s Highway”) and a member of the Latino Literature Hall of Fame.

Raised in both Tijuana and San Diego by his Mexican father and American mother, Luis is a graduate of the University of California, San Diego and the University of Colorado Boulder.

He is currently a professor of creative writing at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The Big Read is a community reading initiative of free events and book discussions held throughout Santa Monica from March 29 through May 4, 2014.

The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, designed to celebrate literature by encouraging people to read for pleasure and enlightenment.

The Big Read at SMPL is made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional support from The Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library, and is offered in partnership with the Santa Monica Museum of Art, Santa Monica College and Olympic High School.
