SMMUSD to Hold Special Meeting on October 30, 2017

Latest SMMUSD news.

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education will hold a special open session meeting on Monday, October 30, 2017, at 5 pm in the district office board room: 1651 16th St., Santa Monica, CA.

The purpose of the meeting is to allow the Board of Education to discuss the Malibu Unification Negotiations Committee (MUNC) reports, the School Services of California (SSC) analysis and
the City of Malibu’s petition for unification. The Board of Education created the Malibu Unification Negotiations Committee (MUNC) in
December 2015, following Malibu community requests, to review the prospect of unification. MUNC was charged with focusing on financial aspects of unification to ensure the process created two separate financially viable school districts, and that a Santa Monica USD does not suffer reduced funding for student opportunities and programs. The MUNC presented a report to the school board and Santa Monica and Malibu communities in March and 2017, focused on the fiscal impacts, as tasked, one of nine criteria used to determine feasibility of unification.

SSC was asked by the school board to review the MUNC report and conduct its own analysis. The Board of Education will discuss this report, alongside the MUNC analysis at this Special Meeting, as well as the City of Malibu’s petition for unification.

Any action regarding a position on Malibu unification would be presented at the Board of Education at a future board meeting yet to be announced. For more details, check out the links below.
