Literacy Festival at SMC Is Saturday:

Sponsored by Santa Monica College in collaboration with the North Bay Association for the Education of Young Children, the festival focuses on children’s early literacy and language development as the foundation for all subsequent learning.

Entertainment at the festival will emphasize the joys of reading and storytelling.

Scheduled to perform are Dan Crow and the Thunderwear Band, Parker Bent, Flights of Fantasy Story Theatre, and Rhythm Child.

Clifford the Big Red Dog will greet children at a Book Fair sponsored by Scholastic Books.

Several local early childhood education programs will give children the opportunity to explore a variety of creative, literacy-based activities.

Connections For Children, a child care resource and referral agency, focuses on child development, advocates for quality early learning experiences for all children, and provides community resources for families, teachers, and caregivers. It launched the festival in 2001 to celebrate 25 years of support for quality child care. Now an annual event, it attracts 1,200 to 1,500 young children, their families, and caregivers annually.The festival will take place on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Clock Tower quad at SMC, 1900 Pico Boulevard. It’s free and open to the public. Free parking is available.
