The Santa Monica College football team is still winless after a 36-6 loss to LA Southwest College Saturday.
There will be no community college football in Southern California this weekend with every team receiving a bye.
Coach Robert Taylor spotted improvement in some areas Saturday, but his team’s record became 0-5. The next game will be Oct. 15 at home against Hancock.
“We’ll concentrate on fundamentals the next two weeks in practice and hope to turn things around like we did last season,” said Taylor.
SMC wound up the 2004 season with five consecutive victories.
“We improved some,” said Taylor. “We tackled better and hustled. I don’t see anyone quitting. But we’ve had some injuries and we’re inexperienced.”
Both starting safeties are probably out for the season. Eddie Newton from Venice High has a shoulder injury and Tommy Dennaro a concussion.SMC almost matched Southwest in yardage, being outgained only 259-247. Jon Weaver ran for 60 yards in 11 carries and Anthony Celestine caught seven passes.
