SANTA MONICA CARJACKING SUSPECT DEAD AFTER SHOOTOUT WITH SMPD OFFICERS IN VENI:

On Thursday, February 9, 2006 in the wee small hours of 4:39 am, the Santa Monica Police Department responded to Michigan Avenue and 10th Street regarding an armed robbery and carjacking that had just occurred. The vehicle taken was a black/red Dodge Shadow.

According to preliminary information from the Santa Monica police, SMPD officers located the vehicle in Venice minutes later, at 4:55 am. The driver stopped the car and got out armed with a shotgun. Shots were fired at the officers. The suspect then got back in the car, and a pursuit ensued which terminated in the 400 block of Santa Clara Avenue in Venice. At the termination of the pursuit, the suspect got out of the car again and pointed a shotgun towards officers, who fired upon him. “Officers gave verbal commands encouraging the suspect to surrender,” according to a SMPD press release. The suspect refused to comply and again pointed the shotgun at officers, who again fired upon him.

The press release stated, “The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.” Police representatives could not be reached for further information at the time of this posting.

No officers were injured, and the victim from the carjacking was not injured.
